MARDI GRAS ACTIVITIESEvery member of The Newcomers Club of New Orleans is considered a member of the Krewe of Neophermenos. This Mardi Gras organization was formed in an effort to help its members become a part of a famous New Orleans tradition. Members of the club who are interested in being a part of the Krewe can begin their involvement in the following two ways: First, attend the Ball! It is held the Friday before Mardi Gras. Or, if you want to be “part of the action,” you may wish to join the Little Krewe: A group of newcomers who come out before the Tableaux (Presentation of the Court) and raise the enthusiasm of the spectators by throwing doubloons and beads. Several parties are held during the season for the Little Krewe members to get to know each other. “Neophermenos” means “newly transplanted to this soil.” The first Carnival Ball was held February 17, 1954, and has since become an important event of the Club’s social calendar. The first Doubloon, bearing the crest on one side, depicted a scene of Old New Orleans on the reverse. Produced first for the 1967 Ball, the tradition has continued to this day. The scene is chosen annually by the captain and is drawn by a club member. There are currently two doubloons on display at the Smithsonian Institute, one of which is a doubloon from the Krewe of Neophermenos. We are proud of the fact that all of the costumes, headpieces and harnesses you see at our balls are designed, sewn and constructed by members of the club.
